Walk the Talk with Joe and Vasa

Following Vanita Prasad’s article in the Western Leader last week, I was inspired to go and meet Vasa Tasele and Joe O’Neill, of Walk the Talk, a project that is set to change the chemistry of the body politic and get the nation feeling better about itself.

Exercise changes chemistry, creating positive changes during peak exercise, many of which persist long after you’ve stopped.  Walking to tackle child abuse is such a practical approach to connecting problems and then providing pleasurable solutions, that it’s just got to succeed.

This is a commitment to a simple message, right in their own community - hey, exercise makes you feel good.  It reduces stress levels and quite simply improves your mood - a definite bonus for kids. Current statistics on child abuse in New Zealand make unpleasant reading to say the least.

“Not so long ago we were teenagers’ says Vasa, 28, “and there are a lot of younger teenagers who feel the same as we do. It’s good that mothers bring the issues up. Why are men not doing it? We’re encouraging the guys to pick this up and make the world a better place”.

And what do they need, these everyday trailblazers, Vasa a trained actor, and Joe, New Zealand’s answer to Gok Wan, who used to be the fat boy at school?

They need your support, and you get membership to the ultimate gym - the great outdoors - as well as ridding the nation of child abuse - all free just for turning up.

Conscious Sport: the new activism.  Loosen up people!

Next walk - 24th June. Check it out
