Glee Comes to West Auckland

They may not get slushy's thrown over them when walking down the corridor, but the lack of boys in  the modern dance group at Bruce McClaren intermediate suggests that sports, soccer, touch, netball, hockey, may still be seen as way cooler than your moves on the dance floor.  Not so for the Modern Dance group from Bruce Mclaren Intermediate when I spoke to them last week at a rehearsal for the Corban Arts Festival which took place on Saturday 5th May; expressive dance and competitive sports are equally important to these girls.

The group has performed at the Corban Arts Festival for several years now and is ‘student led’, which means that the group comprising six dancers, Valerie, Veronica, Ruby, and Jamie-Leigh, ably choreographed and directed by group leaders Katie Williscroft and Tayla Norris, motivates and organises itself. I’m sure those who caught the performance will agree that the choreography was of a high standard and all the dancer’s timing excellent.  Katie is especially vocal and enthusiastic about her ambition to become a professional dancer, own her own dance studio and develop her passion for dancing with her dog.

Other acts at the truly eclectic festival included the lovely Pacifica Group from the Peninsula Primary School, a cultural group performance by the Chinese New Settlers Service Trust, vibrant drumming from Ghanian duo Zoh-Zoh, instrumentals from the Sargam School of Indian Music, and dance and musical contributions from Henderson Intermediate, Henderson Valley, Arahoe Primary and Waitakere Primary.

With workshops including Maori weaving, junk jewellery, sugar craft, clay modelling, the sky really is the limit at this festival for enjoying and showcasing local talent.  With the theme this year “You are the future” - Glee, eat your heart out!
